Webber Pond, Vasselboro Maine 5/22/18
Conditions:
With the water temperature at 62 degrees, we fully expected that the Largemouth spawn would be going on. Weather was an overcast and windy day, with moments of sunshine and waves depending on which shore we were located. Water was stained on everywhere except the shallow coves and shores protected by the wind. There it was a bit more clear. Air temperature was low 70's which made it comfortable to be on the water all day.
Observations:
We saw a lot of beds in many spots all over the pond. The only Bass near the beds were smaller fish, which tells us that they are most likely males on guard duty. While the females have completed their arduous task of laying eggs and are resting in deeper water. Having found a few schools of Black crappie we sometimes targeted them to keep things exciting while the Bass fishing was slow. Overall we caught a half dozen Bass, mostly in the one pound range but with one that was 2.5. The Crappie fishing was easy and if we had wanted to I Have no doubt we could have filled a bucket with them.
Conclusion:
With the Bass spawn happening and probably near completion, you can expect the late spring Post Spawn lull to begin. The bass fishing in most places should be pretty slow over the next few weeks while the ladies recover from the work they've done. Then Summer cycle will begin and fishing will be best in the early morning or late evenings.
