Water temperature ranged from 61-64 F yesterday in Mid coast/Southern Maine, which indicates that the Bass on this pond SHOULD have already began to spawn. If the lake you are currently fishing is not quite that high yet, you should be enjoying the peak of the pre-spawn fishing conditions. If that's the case, hit the shallows and cover lots of ground, they are hungry! Windy and warm days in the forecast should lead to some really fun fishing if the big girls haven't already laid eggs.
Once the water temperature reaches 60 Keep an eye out for the spawning beds in the shallows; they'll be a light spot on a dark bottom about the size of a big trash can lid. If you stumble onto them and see a fish on the bed, its likely a male and its already too late, they're onto you, good luck. Make note of the location, and come back later in your trip or even another day. This time keep your distance and make long casts that will cross the bed on your retrieve. If the water is clear make sure you use small bait on light line otherwise you wont have a chance. The Bass bite during the spawn is primarily based on the "get out of my face" reaction of the males to objects approaching their bed. The Big girls have now moved to deeper water and are recovering from the labor of laying all those eggs. Tight lines!
Great guy! Good times! I Highly recommend!
